The Hobbit 2: Desolation of Smaug is a second installment of a three-part film adaptation based on the 1937 novel: The Hobbit by  J.R.R Tolkien. The leading edition: An Unexpected Journey which was produced in 2012 will then conclude with the third installment: There And Back Again which is set to be released in 2014 and will act as a prequel to Jackson's The Lord Of The Rings film trilogy.

An aircraft in New Zealand, Auckland featuring the dragon Smaug was set to be released ten days ahead of The Hobbit. The aircraft headed out to Los Angeles arriving just in time for the premiere which was on the 2nd December 2013. This was a form of marketing.
